Beckfoot Thornton suspends staff member over alleged online posts

Beckfoot Thornton, on Leaventhorpe Lane, says they have taken “swift action” since being made aware of the posts, which purport to be from the staff member’s social media account.

The school has launched an investigation and is taking the allegations “very seriously.”

A spokesperson for the school told the Telegraph & Argus: “Following allegations made about a member of staff, we took swift action, in line with the school’s rigorous policies and procedures on staff conduct.

“As a school, we take this matter very seriously and would like to reaffirm our commitment to anti-racism and an inclusive culture.

“Our absolute priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff and support is available for those who may have been affected.”

Beckfoot Thornton says the posts in question date back “some years” and an investigation is now underway.

They also wanted to reassure everyone associated with the school their “absolute priority” is the safety and well-being of students and staff.

A letter sent to parents today (Thursday) from headteacher Sally Trussell read: “I am writing to update you on the ongoing circumstances surrounding a member of staff, which you may already be aware of.

“Yesterday evening, the school was informed of inappropriate social media posts made some years ago.

“We took swift action, in line with the school’s rigorous policies and procedures on staff conduct, to commence an investigation into the allegations made.

“The member of staff has been suspended, pending the outcome of this investigation.”

She added: “As a school, we take this matter very seriously and would like to reaffirm our commitment to the use of positive language and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all within our school.

“Our absolute priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff, we are dedicated to reflecting the values of the diverse communities which we serve.

“We would again like to reassure you that the school is taking the appropriate action, in line with our robust code of conduct, and will follow the appropriate processes to rectify the situation.

“If you would like to discuss this matter further, please reach out via email to office@beckfootthornton.org and a member of the school team will be in touch.

“We would like to thank you for your ongoing support and your commitment to the education of your child(ren).”
